Award Criteria

Established in 2002, the Dick Martin Scholarship Award was established by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) in memory of Mr. Richard (Dick) Martin, a former Governor of CCOHS, to recognize his tireless efforts and pioneering work in the field of Occupational Health and Safety.

Award
$3000 (three awards of $3000 are presented)
Eligibility
Any student enrolled, either full-time or part-time, in an Occupational Health and Safety related course or program at an accredited college or university in Canada leading to an OH&S certificate, diploma or degree. Programs include mine safety, occupational or industrial health and safety, industrial hygiene, safety management or other related safety degree program.
Application
All applications must include a completed application form and will be evaluated on the basis of an essay submission. A Selection Committee will score the essays based on the following criteria.
Criteria
1000-1200 word essay on a topic related to your area of study in Occupational Health & Safety. Marks on the essay will be awarded as follows:
  • intellectual content (original, thought-provoking) - 50%
  • practical value - 20%
  • theoretical value - 20%
  • presentation and style - 10%

Guidelines
  1. The essay must be word processed in a 12-point font, double-spaced.
  2. Pages must be numbered.
  3. Essays must include a bibliography.
  4. Applicant's name must not appear on any page of the essay.
  5. Information resources for writing the essay can be found at www.ccohs.ca.
  6. One essay submission only per applicant.
Ownership
All essays submitted become the property of CCOHS. Successful essays will be published by CCOHS and may be, along with information about the winners, shared widely through our web site, government agencies, and media.

Submission
The application form and essay must be submitted together, either electronically by e-mail to scholarship@ccohs.ca or by mail to:

Deadline
Essays are to be received no later than 5:00 pm on January 31st of each year. Submissions received after the deadline will not be considered.
Notification
All applicants will be notified of the Selection Committee's decision.
Administration
The Dick Martin Scholarship Award program is administered by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety. CCOHS employees, children or relatives of employees are not eligible for this scholarship award.
